Turkmen and Russian pomegranates: translations and meanings of the names



I translated the names, and did majority of the naming searches first time in Jan of 2010. I edited it a bit more today.  Accession IDs refer to the USDA pomegranate germplasm repository at Wolfskill station, UC Davis.  As I understand, most (or all) of these accessions came from Dr. Levin, who was in charge of pomegranate collection at the Experimental Station of Plant Genetic Resources, Garrygala (Кара-Кала in Turkmen and Russian) in Turkmenistan (USSR).

      Thanks a lot for this interesting table! I read the whole table and I think it has two small mistakes.
      - In "Shirin Zigar" cultivar, Shirin means sweet in Persian.
      - Turan means "the land of the Tur" not "Turks". Tur (the son of king Fereydun) is a character in the Persian epic Shahnameh.

  2. Thanks! I just got 2 large pomegranates... Vkusnyi and Agat so i am hoping for some blooms this year to taste test! And of course...grafting next year pending what variety is yummiest!

  9. Agat is grown in the AZRFG's demo garden down at the Cooperative Exchange in Phoenix, AZ. I was surprised they were harvesting it in the beginning of August. And loving the taste. That would make it very early for a pom around here. Have not talked to the "curator" yet to get the scoop.
